Biosecurity Management
How to Help Us
Border Requirements

As part of the overall New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy Funding Package, the Ministry of Fisheries has been allocated $9.8 million over the five years 2000 - 2005 to develop information and management systems to enhance New Zealand's biosecurity.

The six marine biosecurity programmes aim to increase knowledge of potentially invasive species and of marine biodiversity in areas most at risk from invasion, as well as supporting the development of our compliance, surveillance and response capabilities.

Baseline Information to Support Border Control
Aim: to provide an inventory of marine plants and animals including introduced species; contribute to the surveillance programme for exotic marine pests; and to monitor changes in biodiversity in marine ports of entry to New Zealand.

Risk Profile for Marine Invaders
Aim: to develop a risk profile for new exotic marine organisms that may arrive in New Zealand.

Compliance Monitoring of Ballast Water Exchange
Aim: to improve monitoring of vessel compliance with New Zealand ballast water requirements.

Alternative Management Tools for Vector Threats
Aim: to develop management tools for threats to biosecurity and biodiversity from vectors including ballast water and hull fouling.

Surveillance for Marine Pests
Aim: to carry out surveillance for marine pests in locations with at-risk biodiversity.

Developing Incursion Response Options/Systems
Aim: to develop a range of tools for responding to incursions of undesirable exotic marine organisms.
