As part of the overall New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy Funding Package, the Ministry of Fisheries has been allocated $9.8 million over the five years 2000 - 2005 to develop information and management systems to enhance New Zealand's biosecurity. The six marine biosecurity programmes aim to increase knowledge of potentially invasive species and of marine biodiversity in areas most at risk from invasion, as well as supporting the development of our compliance, surveillance and response capabilities.
