The Ministry of Fisheries is responsible for marine biosecurity - protecting New Zealand's unique marine environment from introduced pests. Marine biosecurity is a major part of New Zealand's overall biosecurity management.

Biosecurity management in New Zealand
Government agencies and regional councils carry out New Zealand's frontline biosecurity work, a range of activities such as enforcing import rules and surveillance for new exotic pests.

The lead agency for biosecurity is the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (www.maf.govt.nz) (MAF). Other agencies with important roles are:

The Government is advised by the Biosecurity Council (www.maf.govt.nz/biocouncil/index.htm), a group of the Chief Executives of involved Ministries. MAF coordinates the biosecurity awareness programme. For more information, visit Protect NZ.

A Biosecurity Strategy group is working with other stakeholders to develop a New Zealand biosecurity strategy (www.biostrategy.govt.nz).
