The Internet is increasingly being used to provide tools for
the integration, visualization, analysis and dissemination of diverse
types of information. This section outlines New Zealand Internet mapping
services that support biodiversity conservation, as well as some international
services ones.
NATIONAL
DOCgis
DOCgis is an Internet version of an Intranet map service developed by
the Department of Conservation (DOC).
You can use it to view, and overlay, the boundaries of areas administered
by DOC, DOC conservancies and area offices, ecological regions and districts,
and territorial regional and local authorities. It also shows land cover
classes, and 1:250,000 and 1:50,000 topographic maps, as well as black
and white aerial photographs. There is a handy Training Guide on the DOCgis
home page.
Freshwater Biodata Information System FBIS
GIS-supported interactive map searching and display of fish, algae, aquatic plant and invertebrate biodata from New Zealand 's freshwater streams, rivers and lakes. Developed by NIWA with funding from the Department of Conservation.
National Aquatic Biodiversity Information System (NABIS)
NABIS has been established by the Ministry of Fisheries to improve access to information about New Zealand 's marine biodiversity. The system is to be developed in stages. Current resources include topographical details, biological information for some species, some fisheries management and catch information and metadata and attribute data.
NZTopoOnline
Online version of the New Zealand topographic database. Provided by Land Information New Zealand (LINZ).
INTERNATIONAL
Gulf of Maine Biogeographic
Information
A joint initiative of the University of Southern California (USC), DFO
Maritimes Region (Bedford Institute of Oceanography, BIO, Halifax) the
Atlantic Reference Center (ARC, St Andrews), and System Science Applications
(SSA). The Gulf of Maine Biogeographic Information System project (GMBIS)
has been funded for two years by NOPP/Sloan as a pilot project for the
Census of Marine Life (CoML) programme’s
Ocean Biogeographical Information System
(OBIS). The project's goals are to develop, test and demonstrate information
dissemination and visualization tools, overlaying numerous environmental
and ecosystem data layers in the Gulf of Maine region.
