The Department of Conservation is the management authority responsible for administering CITES in New Zealand, while the New Zealand Customs Service and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Quarantine Service are responsible for monitoring and enforcing CITES trade documentation at the border.

INSTITUTIONS
New Zealand participates in a number of international institutions relevant to biodiversity protection and management.

Commission on Sustainable Development

New Zealand’s involvement

Environment Protection and Heritage Council
EPHC is a joint Australia-New Zealand Ministerial Council and aims to ensure the protection of the environment and heritage of Australia and New Zealand. It replaces parts of the Australia-New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC). The natural resource management functions of ANZECC are addressed by the Natural Resource Management Minsterial Council (NRMMC).


Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) New Zealand has been a party to the facility since February 2001.

Natural Resource Management Ministerial Council (NRMMC)
NRMMC is a joint Australia-New Zealand Ministerial Council, and replaces parts of the Australia-New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC). The NRMMC seeks to promote the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in New Zealand and Australia. The environment and heritage protection functions of ANZECC are addressed by the Environment Protection and Heritage Council (EPHC).

Spatial Information Council (ANZLIC) – an intergovernmental council involving the governments of New Zealand and Australia (including the states and territories). ANZLIC supports the development and use of quality spatially referenced information in Australia’s and New Zealand’s economic, social and environmental decision making.
