Coastal Dune Vegetation Network Bulletins
The Coastal Dune Vegetation Network has published material to support dune restoration in New Zealand:

Karst Management Guidelines 1999 – policies and actions
Produced by the Department of Conservation to guide the effective management of karst ecosystems in New Zealand. 28pp.

Lake Managers’ Handbooks 2002
A series of four handbooks has been produced by the Ministry for the Environment and NIWA and occasional others, to inform lake management in New Zealand. These handbooks update the earlier Lake Managers’ Handbook (Vant, 1987) to reflect new knowledge and experience of New Zealand lake management.

  • Land-Water Interactions
    Describes water, sediment, nitrogen and phosphorus sources, overviews lake modelling techniques, protocols for monitoring and measuring loads that are needed for modelling, and methods for reducing loads to lakes. Case studies are also used. 78pp.
  • Lake-Level Management
    Includes material on lake levels, lakeshore erosion and marginal vegetation. Produced with input from the Universities of Otago and Canterbury and funding from the Foundation for Research Science and Technology. 89p.
  • Alien Invaders
    Discusses the plant and alien pest species currently known to threaten New Zealand lakes, their entry pathways, distribution, the problems they cause, and the endangered species and habitats that they threaten. Also identifies future pest species, reviews biosecurity legislation and discusses management options. 51p.
  • Fish in New Zealand lakes
    Describes native and exotic fish species found in substantial New Zealand lakes and reservoirs (greater than 20 hectares) and the factors that affect them. Discusses monitoring, measurement and management options, and concludes with a case study.


Managing waterways on farms: A guide to sustainable water and riparian management in rural New Zealand 2001
This guide from the Ministry for the Environment provides information about stream deterioration in farmed catchments and land management options to reduce impacts and actively enhance waterways.

The Green Toolbox
Landcare Research maintains the Green Toolbox to assist plant selection for a variety of land management applications in New Zealand. The toolbox is freely available and has been developed in collaboration with others. Funded by the New Zealand Foundation for Research, Science and Technology.

Aquatic Weed Management 2002
A guide to the management of aquatic weeds. Developed by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) and includes discussion of issues, control methods and monitoring.

Lagarosiphon Workshop Proceedings 2003
A comprehensive record of a two-day workshop to consider Lagarosiphon in Lake Wanaka, South Island, New Zealand. Organised by the Guardians of Lake Wanaka and reported by the Department of Conservation. 41pp.

New Zealand Pest Plant Manual 2002
The New Zealand Pest Plant Manual identifies key pest plants banned from distribution, commercial sale and propagation nationally and/or regionally. These plants can be either already found in New Zealand , or would be problematic if they were to arrive here. The manual was produced in 2002 following the National Pest Plant Accord between regional councils and government departments with biosecurity responsibilities.

Massey University maintains NZ Weeds as a resource for students and the general public. The site provides information on weeds identification and control.

Bay of Plenty Weed Control Manual
The Bay of Plenty Weed Control Manual , also known as the Weed Index, provides information on weed identification and control, and is hosted by Environment Bay of Plenty.

Canterbury Weed Guide
A regional guide to weed identification with some advice on control options. This guide is produced by Christchurch City Council. Some information is applicable throughout New Zealand although not all the plants identified on the site are a weed everywhere.

Weedbusters
Weedbusters is a nationally coordinated weed awareness and education programme with support for on the ground work in the regions. Developed with support from regional councils, government agencies and others.

Indicators for terrestrial biodiversity
Information about the Ministry for the Environment's development of indicators for terrestrial biodiversity (c.1996-2000) can be found under the Technical Reports on biodiversity and state of the environment. The Ministry is not currently working on terrestrial biodiversity indicators. The Department of Conservation is doing further work on terrestrial biodiversity indicators as part of the Natural Heritage Management System (NHMS) project.

Lake Submerged Plant Index (LakeSPI) 2002
LakeSPI is a tool to assist monitoring lake condition. Developed by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) and funded by the Ministry for the Environment Sustainable Management Fund (SMF).

Work by Statistics New Zealand on natural resource accounts for energy, fish, forestry, minerals and water.

Natural heritage management system (NHMS)
The NHMS project is charged with developing business processes and tools to describe the state and change of terrestrial and freshwater biodiversity in New Zealand and the results of management interventions. The project is managed by the Department of Conservation and includes a programme to develop biodiversity indicators (and business processes and tools to support those indicators) for terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments, species and pests. Landcare Research in partnership with the Department of Conservation has prepared a preliminary report “Biodiversity inventory and monitoring: a review of national and international systems and a proposed framework for future biodiversity monitoring by the Department of Conservation”. Stream Health Monitoring and Assessment Kit 2002 (updated) (SHMAK)
Developed jointly by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) and New Zealand Federated Farmers, and partly funded by the Ministry for the Environment Sustainable Management Fund (SMF), the SHMAK is designed for use by land and water resource managers to monitor the "health" of streams.
