| There are a number
of email discussion groups in New Zealand to help people in specific fields
of biodiversity conservation share their knowledge and experience. The group
owners listed below can be contacted for further information, including
details on joining.
Animal Abundance Estimation
A forum for discussion on quantitative monitoring of animals, both assets
and pests. Sub-groups of the list include users of distance sampling (including
the programme DISTANCE) and Mark-recapture methods (including the programme
MARK). The group is primarily oriented to users within the Department
of Conservation (DOC), but includes
others with similar interests. Contact Ian
Westbrooke.
Coastal Cress Recovery Group
Covers the conservation status of coastal cress, and associated conservation
management actions. Contact Phil
Knightbridge.
Coastal
Dune Vegetation Network
The Coastal Dune Vegetation Network is a collaborative research network
and focuses on the sustainable management of dune ecosystems with a focus
on research into restoring the natural character, form and function of
dunes.
Herbarium
Network
Links to registered members of the New Zealand National Herbarium Network,
maintained by the Department
of Botany of Otago University.
Invertebrate Contacts
A network for the dissemination of information on invertebrates, and a
forum for advice on issues or questions relating to invertebrates and
conservation. Contact Carl McGuinness.
Kaitiaki.org.nz
An on-line forum for kaitiaki māori covering environmental and resource
management issues. This site has been established with funding from the
Ministry for the Environment’s Sustainable
Management Fund (SMF).

For discussing any queries about the conservation and propagation of mistletoes
and posting notices relating to the Loranthaceous Mistletoe Recovery Group.

Science Helpline
This site is provided by Otago University for any questions on zoology.
Pestchat
An open forum where members discuss issues and share information related
to the control of a wide range of plant and animal pests (e.g. feral pigs,
goats, possums, rodents, mustelids, feral cats, deer, wallabies, magpies,
chamois, thar, weeds, invasive fish and wasps). Members include scientists,
DOC and Regional Council staff, conservation

Contact Steve Hart.
Phenology
This group aims to better understand how phenology (timing of fruiting,
flowering and bud-break in plants) for different species relate together
and how phenology affects both breeding of native species and outbreaks
of pest species in New Zealand. Contact Astrid
Dijkgraaf.
Threatened Plants
A network to spread information and seek advice about threatened plant
conservation and management. Contact Andrew
Townsend.
Weed Monitoring Control
Covers assessment of the results (e.g. weeds killed, numbers surviving
and damage to native species) and outcomes (e.g. the change in abundance
of a native plant species) of weed control programmes. Contact Ian
Popay.
Weeds
Covers the characteristics, distribution, abundance and management of
plant pests, especially those that threaten New Zealand's natural heritage.
Contact Clayson Howell.
