Are your developing a new Biodata system? Don’t Forget NZOR The TFBIS Programme is funding Landcare Research to establish an inclusive cross sector project to develop the New Zealand Organisms Register (NZOR). The NZOR project will create an accurate, authoritative, comprehensive and continuously updated catalogue of taxonomic names of all New Zealand biota and other taxa of importance to New Zealand. The project is based on the scoping report What’s in a name? (PDF). It will develop the infrastructure to efficiently mobilise, integrate, and share dispersed authoritative taxonomic information critical to maintaining New Zealand’s Conservation and Biosecurity decision support systems and processes. A cross sector NZOR Governance Group and a Technical Advisory Group have been established to ensure a “whole of sector” approach.. Jerry Cooper, Science Team Leader at Landcare Research, is the NZOR Project Leader. Prof David Penman has been engaged as NZOR Executive Secretary to support the NZOR governance structure. If your agency is involved in, or proposing a major biodata systems upgrade or integration project, check out the NZOR website. If NZOR has relevance to your proposed developments make contact with the NZOR team.Contacts: Jerry.Cooper@nzor.org.nz and execsec@nzor.org.nz. More information on the project can be found at www.nzor.org.nz. Biodiversity Data Landscape Diagram In April 2010 the TFBIS Steering Committee participated in a facilitated workshop to generate a diagram to illustrate the current Biodiversity Data “Landscape”. The diagram assists in understanding the progress on the TFBIS Strategy and helps in identifying gaps. Data, information and systems related to terrestrial and freshwater biodiversity (and some biosecurity) are included. The diagram is, by its nature, representative and may be missing some datasets/systems. If you have any suggestions for new items, or comments regarding the diagram as a whole, please send them to cpartridge@doc.govt.nz. The diagram is currently a PDF. Each of the items, however, can be clicked on to link to the web site for the resource itself (where available). The strategy puts in place five Goals which will guide TFBIS investment in the next 3 -5 years. View the TFBIS strategy (PDF) New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy 2000 The New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy was launched on 29 March 2000. The strategy represents New Zealand’s collective commitment to reverse the decline in the state of New Zealand’s indigenous biodiversity. It established a strategic framework for action, to conserve and, where appropriate, sustainably use and manage the biodiversity of indigenous biodiversity. The TFBIS Programme was established as part of the Government’s funding package that accompanied the strategy release. Theme 9 of the strategy deals with “Information, Knowledge and capacity Requirements for information, knowledge and capacity to effectively manage biodiversity” The TFBIS Programme was established under Objective 9.5 of the strategy. The approved projects are listed in the table below.
Projects funded by the TFBIS Programme are summarised in the following documents, including their titles, organisation, outputs and the year completed.
