In February 2000 the Government adopted the New
Zealand Biodiversity Strategy (NZBS) to halt
the decline in the variety of naturally occurring
plants, animals and ecosystems in New Zealand. The Terrestrial and Freshwater Biodiversity Information System (TFBIS) Programme was established through a Government funding package to achieve the goals of the NZBS and is administered by the Department of Conservation (DOC).
It is the Department’s view that the Programme is for the benefit of all agencies and organisations that contribute to the management of New Zealand’s indigenous biodiversity. Accordingly a cross biodiversity sector approach in allocating funds for biodiversity data and information projects has been adopted. This is reflected by the TFBIS Steering Committee comprising sector representatives that provide advice on project applications.
