The Department of Conservation and the Ministry for the Environment are
working with Local Government New Zealand and other agencies to deliver
a package of measures for protecting indigenous biodiversity on private
land (i.e. areas outside public conservation lands), under the New Zealand
Biodiversity Strategy (NZBS).
The package includes contestable funds
to help land managers improve the condition of biodiversity on private
land, with both advice and financial support. It also includes ensuring
that the regulatory framework assigns responsibilities
and supports the protection of biodiversity on private land.
To guide local bodies and land managers in their decision-making on land
use and protection, there is a programme of guidance
about biodiversity protection on private land.
