Formal voluntary protection of biodiversity on private land Many distinctive and scarce natural habitats and ecosystems are located on private land and are vulnerable to further loss. Many places also have cultural value for tangata whenua, for example relating to traditional resource use (e.g. harakeke/ flax or ika/ fish), or because of spiritual or other relationships they possess. You can apply for help and funding for the formal voluntary protection of native bush, wetlands or other habitats on private or Maori land from three contestable funds:
Review of Non Departmental Funds In August 2009 The Minister of Conservation announced a review of a range of funds and organisations which provide public funding for conservation on private land. This review, which included the Biodiversity Condition and Advice Funds, had been signalled in the Budget and was undertaken by Dr Bill Lee and Lindsay Gow. The Reviewers found the Biodiversity Funds were operating efficiently, had satisfactory evaluation and reporting procedures and had appropriate governance structures in place. The Minister accepted the Reviewers findings and encouraged the Department to continue to implement value for money improvements. This is an ongoing focus for Fund staff who are refining reporting processes and also reviewing options to on how to better target funds to at risk, very high biodiversity sites on private land. No major changes to Fund processes are anticipated in the short term.
