The success or failure of animal pest control in New Zealand depends on access to information, the development of innovative new techniques and ‘best practice’ in the use of control technology. With these issues in mind, New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy funding is being used to support the technical infrastructure required to sustain the Department of Conservation’s pest control programmes. By improving and sharing knowledge of pest control techniques, rangers and pest controllers can keep ahead of the pests using the best available techniques. This work aims to enhance knowledge about pest control technology (e.g. developing new techniques to allow control to be undertaken in more and larger areas, the safer use of toxins, improving stoat control techniques etc) and improving access to technical information for those planning pest control operations. Particular initiatives include an animal pest management database, improved coordination of animal pest control networks, and developing ‘best practice’ for animal pest control techniques. |
